At the October 23rd Campbell County School District Board meeting, the trustees heard a recommendation from associate superintendent for instruction Dr. Boyd Brown. Brown recommended a start date of Aug 28th next school year. Brown noted the new calender is similar in many aspects to previous calendars but said they did drop 5 early release days. Both Brown and trustee Lisa Durgin noted that too many early release days was a common complaint from parents when discussing the calender for the district. Brown said the last day of school for the 2013-14 year is set to be May 30th, and a snow day has been put in.
However the district will decide later when to have parent-teacher conferences. School officials had suggested scheduling those conference on Nov. 4 and Nov. 5, 2013.The Monday and Tuesday dates would be different from previous years when conferences took place on Wednesday night, Thursday and sometimes a portion of Friday.
Trustee Anne Ochs voiced concern with the change and noted the elementary schools have about a 99% rate of response from parents the way things have been. She voiced concern changes could have a negative impact to that response. Durgin questioned whether there should be an early release the Wednesday before conferences start. Brown said he will gather more information and input to aid the board in the decision.
