Highway Patrol Release on Fatal Crash

wyohighwaypatrolLarry Schofield (65) was on the scene of a car vs. deer crash on eastbound Interstate 90 with his tow truck.  A Wyoming Trooper was still on scene investigating the crash.  Emergency lights were activated on the vehicles.  All of the vehicles were parked on the eastbound emergency lane shoulder and there was no blockage of the two eastbound lanes of travel.  Schofield was standing on the driver’s side of his rollback tow truck working the controls in order to recover the damaged vehicle from the car vs. deer crash.  Justin Helsper (28), who was also eastbound, failed to move over and struck Schofield with the right front of his vehicle.  After impact, Helsper failed to stop and continued eastbound.  The Trooper on scene notified another Trooper who observed Helsper’s vehicle eastbound approximately 1½ mile from the fatal crash scene.  Helsper’s vehicle was stopped and he was taken into custody and faces charges of aggravated vehicular homicide.  Troopers investigating this fatal crash believe alcohol is a contributing factor and are awaiting toxicology results.

The crash resulted in a temporary closure of the eastbound lanes of I-90 for approximately 3½ hours.
