Robert Moffit age 60, and Margaret age 58 of Leesburg Florida were killed in a crash Tuesday night four miles west of Buffalo. What follows is the updated information from the Wyoming Highway Patrol:
The crash occured 4 miles west of Buffalo in Johnson County. Moffitt’s tractor trailer combination was pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with bags of bentonite. As Moffitt descended down a long steep grade on Powder River Pass his tractor trailer brakes overheated as he was in to high of a gear for the steep grade. This resulted in a loss of braking. For reasons unknown, Moffitt failed to use the primary runaway truck ramp and the secondary runaway truck ramp, both of which are marked and signed for truckers to use in just this situation.
After passing the runaway truck ramps Moffitt attempted to negotiate a left hand curve in the roadway near the bottom of the pass, however was traveling at too fast a speed and the tractor trailer combination rolled onto it’s right side. The combination then went through the guardrail where it dropped 150 feet coming to rest in Mosier Gulch. Due to the severity of the crash no vehicle information is available at this time.
