Sheridan, Wyo. (July 30, 2013) – A rise in the number of unoccupied recreational vehicles on the Bighorn National Forest has led the Forest Service to increase patrols in the national forest.
Dispersed camping (outside developed campgrounds) in recreational vehicles is allowed within 300 feet of Forest Service numbered roads designated on the Bighorn’s Motor Vehicle Use Map. Between June 1 and September 10 each year, dispersed camping is limited to 14 consecutive days in one location. After 14 days, campers must move at least five air miles from the previous location. A one-vehicle accident early Sunday morning in Johnson County killed a 23-year-old Kaycee man and hospialized another man. David Niffenegger (23) died at the scene and 26-year-old Michael Mondeau was transported to Johnson County Memorial Hospital in Buffalo. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Buffalo Field Office is seeking information related to the dumping of hydrocarbon waste at the Welch Ranch Management area on Decker Highway (Highway 338). An unauthorized discharge of a hydrocarbon substance was reported on the morning of Wednesday, July 24. Preliminary estimations are that approximately 100 gallons were dumped along the access road on the northeast side of the Tongue River bridge.
