Gillette, Wyo.--The (#21) Gillette College Pronghorn women (17-3, 4-2) showed that they are able to make adjustments when curve balls are thrown at them. A couple Pronghorns stepped up off the bench to help the team down the Central Wyoming College Lady Rustlers (7-11, 0-5), 61-52, at the South Campus.
Keke Wright, the leading scorer for Gillette College with 18.6 points per game, served her her first of a two-game suspension for breaking team rules Wednesday night. However, Matty Jolovich and Breanna Thomas led the bench players to make up for the loss of Wright.
The game started out the same way as the Williston State game on Monday night. There were numerous lead changes and a couple of ties in the first half. Chelsie Pitt made two, three-pointers in the first half-she finished with five treys in the game. Thomas was strong underneath and at the low posts, as she sank all of her eight points in the half. Jolovich took advantage of here opportunities at the free throw line and went five for five in the first stanza.
Gillette College had a 26-23 lead at halftime.
The Lady Rustlers started out running in the second half and tied it up at 33 points apiece. Pitt responded with another trey to break the tie and give the momentum and lead back to the Pronghorns. Central Wyoming trailed the rest of the game after that point.
Christina Davis, Kiela Garner, Chelsea Ullery and Halli Stocklin played tough in the second half on defense. The four of them were able to form double teams and force pressure on the Lady Rustlers offense. Stocklin's only points of the game, a wide open three-pointer from the right of the key, turned out to be one of the nails in the coffin and helped solidify the Pronghorns lead.
Gillette College made 63.3 percent of its free throws. In addition to the success from the charity stripe, the six, three-pointers by Pitt and Stocklin helped keep the Lady Rustlers from coming back in the game.
Pitt had the game-high of 20 points and Kaylee Walker led the Lady Rustlers with 11 points.
The Pronghorns travel to Casper to take on the Lady T-birds on Saturday. Game time is 3:00pm.
