Pronghorn men advance in Region IX tournament

Casper, Wyo,--By game time of the #4 Gillette College vs. #5 Eastern Wyoming College contest on Sunday afternoon, the South Subregion teams of the Region IX had won four out of the five games. Only Casper College, the host of the tournament, was a winner of the North. #2 Sheridan College lost to #7 Northeastern Junior College, 97-81, on Saturday afternoon. Gillette College became the second team from the North Subregion to advance with a 84-77 victory over the Lancers.

Gillette College lost to Eastern Wyoming College, 83-75, on Jan. 29th, in Torrington. That was their only match up of the season coming into the game.

The Pronghorns started out with a modest 6-0 run, but Eastern Wyoming came from behind to take their only lead at 10-8, on a triple by Ryan Wilson from outside the right wing. The Pronghorns quickly took the lead back in what became a 15-0 run by Gillette College at 23-10.

With 9:23 left in the first half, Gillette College forced  Eastern Wyoming to commit 7 fouls. Dwight Anderson sank a three-pointer from the right side to double up Eastern Wyoming at 32-16 with 9:05 to go in the half, which forced an Eastern timeout. That settled down the Lancers, as they started to make some buckets, but the Pronghorns had a 42-32 lead at halftime.

The Lancers started the second half strong. It was a 9-3 run for Eastern Wyoming College before Head Coach Shawn Neary called a timeout at the 17:04 mark. Gillette College was on top, 45-41.

That was the closest the Lancers would get to the Pronghorns in the second half, even though they kept it a single-digit game for most of the second stanza.

The Pronghorns shot 50 percent from the field and were led by Andre Marquez with 20 points. Dwight Anderson, Myles Henry and Travontis Richardson also finished with double digits in the contest.

Wilson of Eastern Wyoming led all players with 23 points.

The Pronghorns take on #1 North Platte Community College of the South Subregion on Monday at 3pm. North Platte CC, out of North Platte, Neb. has never played the Pronghorns in Gillette College's four-year history-reular season or playoffs.
