Country music superstar Tim McGraw is ushering in the holiday season with the release of his version of “It Wasn’t His Child”! McGraw first performed the Christmas standard at the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway and most recently reprised it against a stunning holiday backdrop on this year’s CMA Country Christmas, which will re-air December 21 at 10/9c on ABC.
Originally written and performed by Skip Ewing, McGraw’s cover was arranged and co-produced by his longtime band leader Danny Hemingson along with Steve Gibson and Byron Gallimore. “It Wasn’t His Child” has been a favorite song of McGraw’s for years.
“It’s been a crazy year and we’ve worked hard to put out music, knowing how much it can mean and provide solace in difficult times,” McGraw shared. “This is our final chance to thank everyone for sticking with us this year and more importantly, provide some Christmas spirit to you this holiday season.”
“It Wasn’t His Child” Lyrics
He was her man and she was his wife
And late one winter night
He knelt by her as she gave birth
But it wasn’t his child, it wasn’t his child
Yet still he took him as his own
And as he watched him grow
It brought him joy, he loved that boy
But it wasn’t his child, it wasn’t his child
And like a father he was strong and kind and good
And I believe he did his best
It wasn’t easy for him but he did all he could
His son was different from the rest
It wasn’t his child, it wasn’t his child
And when the boy became a man
He took his father’s hand
And soon the world would all know why
It wasn’t his child, it wasn’t his child
And like his father he was strong and kind and good
And I believe he did his best
It wasn’t easy for him but he did all he could
He grew up with his hands in wood
And he died with his hands in wood
He was God’s child, he was God’s child
He was her man and she was his wife
And late one winter night
He knelt by her as she gave birth
But it wasn’t his child, it was God’s child
