Luke Combs and the Song That Country Radio Couldn’t Ignore
Written by Kathy Paxton on April 29, 2026
Here is your Country story of the day!
Before Luke Combs was a superstar selling out stadiums, he was just a guy uploading songs online and building a grassroots following one fan at a time. I remember standing in my daughter in love’s kitchen and her saying “Mom – have you heard this guy? He’s really good”. She had found him somewhere on social media, where she finds all the new guys coming up hot before we even have a chance to hear them on air! That song was Hurricane.
It had no big push at first—just real people connecting to a real song. It wasn’t backed by a major label either, but it didn’t need one. The buzz got so big, country radio couldn’t ignore it. Fans connected with its raw emotion and relatable story—and they started streaming it… a lot.
It grew so big that country radio had no choice but to pay attention.
When Hurricane officially hit radio, it didn’t just perform well—it went to number one, launching Luke Combs into stardom almost overnight. As his debut single, it solidified his career and began a string of consecutive #1 hits. 17 in fact. When he came out with his remake of “Fast Car” in 2023, I think it was the best version I had ever heard.
Since 2016 and Hurricane, Luke has had 21 #1 hits. According to Music Row, he has just set a new record that might have even surprised him: Luke has become the first artist to ever land two different solo songs at No. 1 on the Billboard and Mediabase country radio charts at the same time with no billed collaborators.
Luke is nominated for three awards at the 2026 ACM Awards: Entertainer of the Year, Male Artist of the Year and Artist-Songwriter of the Year so be sure to tune in on May 17th and cheer him on!
Luke Combs proved you didn’t have to follow the traditional Nashville path to make it—you just needed a great song and fans who believed in it. Great country music still starts with a story people feel.
Thanks for the songs Luke and good luck!
