Written by broebling on September 25, 2017
Press Release – Campbell County School District implemented a very successful Spanish Dual Language Immersion program at Stocktrail Elementary for 50 students in kindergarten and 50 students in first grade in the fall of 2016. Those students have progressed into first and second grade, and the District added 50 incoming kindergarten students to the program in the 2017-2018 school year. Due to overwhelming interest, the program was expanded to Rawhide Elementary with 25 kindergarten students enrolling this year. The program will expand every year with new incoming kindergarten students. Children must be 5 years of age on or before September 15, 2018 to be admitted to kindergarten next year.
The District has scheduled informational meetings for parents of incoming kindergarten children who may be interested in the program. The meetings will be held in English on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 and Thursday, October 26, 2017. There will be a meeting held in Spanish on Thursday, October 12, 2017. All meetings will run from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and will be held in the Aspen Room at Lakeway Learning Center, 525 West Lakeway Road. The same information will be presented at all three meetings.
The District anticipates more than 75 families to be interested in the 2018-2019 DLI kindergarten classes. Automatic admission will be granted to siblings of current DLI students. Remaining slots will be determined by a random lottery. Parents are encouraged to call the office of Stocktrail Elementary at 686-8215 or Rawhide Elementary at 682-0774 to indicate their interest and to get their child’s name on a list for the lottery. Parents can indicate if they are interested in Rawhide Elementary, Stocktrail Elementary, or both. Fifty slots will be available at Stocktrail Elementary and 25 will be available at Rawhide Elementary. Names will also be taken at the informational meetings. Parents must request that their child’s name be on the list by January 5, 2018. With the exception of siblings, all remaining available slots will be filled by a random lottery on January 12, 2018. Attendance at the October informational meetings does not increase the likelihood of being selected for the program.
