AVETT BROTHERS CONCERT CANCELED AFTER GUN ALERT

Folk-rock band the Avett Brothers canceled a concert on Saturday after a man brought a gun into the venue and then couldn’t be found by security staff. No violence was reported and the event is set to be rescheduled soon.

The incident took place soon after doors opened at the Edgefield McMenamins in Troutdale, Ore. “An individual passing through the metal detector was found to be carrying a gun,” the Avett Brothers said in a statement. “When confronted by the security guard and informed of the no-firearm policy of the venue, the individual stated that he was an out-of-state police officer and showed a badge. The security guard then asked the individual to wait for the manager so his entry could be confirmed. The individual disregarded her instructions and ventured immediately into the sizable audience.”

The group said that “after an exhaustive search of the venue by the security staff of both the band and the venue, the individual was not located. Due to the obvious threat posed by someone in the audience with a firearm, regardless of his (unconfirmed) claim of being a member of law enforcement, we were obligated, for the safety of everyone present, to cancel the performance.”

The Avett Brothers said the cancellation as “unfortunate” but added that they had “no regret in being in a position to make a decision which helps to keep our fans safe.” They thanked fans for their “understanding in this matter.”

Initial explanations for the move had not mentioned a gun, with McMenamins staff originally citing sound problems, and the Multnomah Country Sheriff’s Office at first saying they had not been informed about a potential threat. A spokesperson later told Oregon Live that an officer had been involved in the search, but since there was “no credible information of a threat to the public,” no further action would be taken.

“The security of our patrons is of utmost importance,” Vicky Hastings, representing McMenamins, said. “We regret the inconvenience but feel the proper decision was made to postpone the show.”
