Hap’s parents and grandparents homesteaded 40 miles south of Gillette, Wyoming in 1917 and 1918. His parents were married in 1930 and were in the ranching business. Hap was born in Gillette in 1934 and attended school for 10 years in Campbell County, Wyoming. He moved with his parents to Oregon after the winter of ’49, where he finished high school. After three years in the United States Army, he returned to Wyoming to manage his uncle’s ranch, who had recently died, leaving his interest to Hap and three other relatives. He was married to the former Ruby Rossi in Gillette on September 6, 1957. She and her family moved to Gillette from Colorado in 1950. Hap and Ruby continued ranching and raised three children. They have seven grandchildren and two great grandsons. Hap’s main hobby is writing and performing cowboy poetry for the purpose of recording events of his life experiences.
