Winter Storm/Weekend

The National Weather Service says their confidence is increasing that a strong winter storm will impact much of Northeast Wyoming/Western South Dakota early this weekend. Winter weather watches have been expanded to cover much of the area, except far northwest South Dakota, for Friday night through early Sunday as heavier snowfall potential has expanded further north and west across the area.

Right now it appears the western half of Campbell County could get about 6 inches, while the eastern half will get up to 5 inches of snow.

Rain and snow is still expected to develop on Friday, with the chance for light freezing rain in spots during the morning. As colder air moves in, precipitation will transition to all snow late Friday and Friday night. At this time, the snow is expected to be heaviest late Friday night and Saturday before gradually tapering off Saturday night.

Breezy conditions Saturday into Saturday night could cause some blowing of snow, but winds are not expected to be a major impact. Snowfall totals of 6 inches or more are possible across the watch area, with the potential for near a foot of snow over south central South Dakota.

There is moderate to high confidence on the storm bringing fairly significant travel impacts to much of the area, but still some uncertainty on the exact track and where the heaviest snowfall will develop.
