Dr. Stamato Recertified in Interventional Cardiology

Press Release – Dr. Nicholas J. Stamato, Campbell County Medical Group (CCMG) Cardiology Clinic, has received recertification in Interventional Cardiology from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), valid through December 31, 2028. Recertification is also called Maintenance of Certification (MOC).
Dr. Stamato sees patients at CCMG Cardiology, located on the third floor of Campbell County Memorial Hospital. In addition to Certification by the ABIM in Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Stamato is certified by the ABIM in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Critical Care Medicine and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. Dr. Stamato works with cardiologist Dr. Sairav Shah, who is also board certified by the AMIM in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology.
The 10-hour recertification exam tested knowledge in the subspecialty of cardiology regarding procedures done in the cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab) such as angioplasty and stenting of arteries of the heart, as well as those in other parts of the body. It also included the emergent treatment of acute myocardial infarctions (heart attacks) in the cardiac cath lab.
Dr. Stamato was also part of an experimental program by the ABIM using simulators to test skills and decision making in the cath lab using a cath lab simulator. This is a near real cath lab experience using a computer to simulate performing an angioplasty and stenting procedure. It is much like a pilot’s flight simulator for training. The ABIM hopes to incorporate these simulations in future board exams.
Participation in MOC means that a physician is demonstrating that he participates in certain continuous learning and education activities and must pass a secure exam. Participating ABIM Board Certified physicians regularly (at least every two years) complete approved MOC activities using a structured framework created by their peers for keeping up with and assessing knowledge of the latest scientific developments and changes in practice and in specialty areas.
ABIM is one of 24 medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Through ABMS, the boards work together to establish common standards for physicians to achieve and maintain board certification. ABIM is an independent, non-profit organization.
