GPD: Man Said Cops Would Die

This morning the Gillette Police Department released additional details on the arrest of a 36-year-old male. Clifford Young, of Casper, was arrested after a standoff of more than four hours on Interstate 90 on the west edge of Gillette yesterday morning. Young allegedly traveled to Gillette to harm himself in front of his 23-year-old ex-girlfriend.
“Text messages included strong references of him wanting her to watch him end himself” — Lieutenant Chuck Deaton
Deaton said that when officers looked at the woman’s phone, they observed that a tracking application may have been downloaded onto the phone. The man also allegedly told the woman she better answer her phone before something bad happened.
“The officers located the 36-year-old driving his 2002 Silver Pontiac Bonneville west of Boxelder Road approaching Burma Avenue.” — Deaton
A traffic stop was attempted, a pursuit ensued, and the vehicle was eventually disabled with spike strips.
“During the pursuit the male was in contact with another male.” — Deaton
The suspect allegedly told the unidentified male that cops were about to die and that he was armed with a .45 semi-automatic pistol. After the vehicle was disabled, he stated there would be a suicide or suicide by cop.
“Our negotiators were successful calming him down. He gave in and agreed to surrender.” — Deaton
Charges include felony possession of a deadly weapon with unlawful intent. Other charges include stalking, alluding and interference with law enforcement. Deaton said additional weapons charges were also a possibility. As of this morning Deaton said they did not have information that the man specifically threatened to kill the ex-girlfriend.
