Press Release – Robert Grunfeld, MS, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon at Powder River Orthopedics and Spine, a Campbell County Medical Group clinic, recently earned Board Certification from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).

Dr. Grunfeld joins PROS physicians Dr. Stanford Israelsen, Dr. Hans Kioschos and Dr. Nathan Simpson, who are also board certified in orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Grunfeld attended medical school at Penn State University and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Penn. He completed a Fellowship in Foot and Ankle at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. Dr. Grunfeld joined the CCH medical staff in 2015.

Board certification is a voluntary program in which specialists seek to improve their performance and demonstrate a commitment to their profession. To be eligible for board certification, Dr. Grunfeld successfully completed a five-year residency program in orthopaedic surgery and passed the rigorous ABOS computer-based examination, encompassing all facets of orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Grunfeld’s clinical competence was evaluated through a credentialing process called ABOS Part II, an oral examination. Experienced surgeons selected 12 of Dr. Grunfeld’s surgical cases performed over a recent six-month period and evaluated specific skills such as data gathering and interpretive skills, diagnostic skills, treatment expertise, technical skills, patient outcomes and applied orthopaedic and medical knowledge.

After passing both the written and oral examinations, Dr. Grunfeld is considered Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery, or a diplomate of the ABOS. The certification is valid for 10 years, and then the diplomate must complete a recertification process, which includes an exam, peer review and continuing education.

The ABOS was founded in 1934 as a private, voluntary, nonprofit, independent organization to serve the best interests of the public and medical profession. The ABOS establishes standards for the education of orthopaedic surgeons and evaluates these standards through examinations and practice evaluations.
